In the times of the Prophet PBUH a man was about to leave home when his wife asked: how long he would be away. He answered that he may not return in one and half years. And he asked her that during that period she shall not step across the threshold of the house. The wife obeyed in those days but today if the husband is out the wife leaves home to express her freedom. If the owner of the house is out the wife goes about.

So the man, a Companion of the Prophet PBUH, left his home for one and a half years and his wife remained at home. But once a message came from her father’s home that her father was extremely ill with little chance of survival. But the wife excused herself and said she had to obey her husband and could not leave home. After some time the message came that her father was about to die and wanted to see her. On this the wife thought that only the Prophet PBUH could solve her problem. If he gives her permission she could go and see her dying father. But after hearing the problem the Prophet PBUH too said that if the husband has placed an obligation on his wife he could not undo it. Had the Prophet PBUH given permission on this occasion I am sure no one could stop her from going out.

Our Prophet PBUH said: had Allah allowed sajda (prostration) to anyone but Himself, he would not have allowed men to do sajda to the Prophet PBUH but the wife to her husband. The man who had taken the wife’s appeal to the Prophet PBUH returned and told her that her appeal had been turned down by the Prophet PBUH. She replied that he should go and tell her father and brothers that she could not come to see the father and that when they take the funeral to the graveyard they should pass by her house to enable her to look at the dead body for the last time. The funeral was then brought and placed inside her house. She grieved greatly but she said to Allah that she had done what she did to get His approval. Allah forgave all her sins there and then.
