Prophet Muhammad PBUH called poet Hazrat Hassan bin Thabit and asked him to put before him every verse of praise that he had written about the Prophet PBUH. I am referring to this hadith found in all the collections because it proves that the Prophet PBUH favoured the writing of verse in praise of the Prophet (naat).
This is the proof that the reciting of naat and the hearing of the naat is worship. Hassan bin Thabit heard the Prophet PBUH and was about to reply when the Prophet PBUH stopped him and pointed to a Companion and asked him to bring the rostrum and then stood aside and told Thabit to occupy the place where he himself used to place himself and asked the poet to recite his naat.
I ask this audience why was not Thabit made to stand somewhere else, why at the place that used to be occupied by the Prophet PBUH? Why not make Thabit stand on the mat? But the Prophet PBUH chose the rostrum and the place where he used to stand. This he did to show to his followers that whenever the praise of the Prophet PBUH is sung, proper reverence must be shown. For us this means that when the Prophet PBUH is being praised, we should wear good clothes and put on perfume and the pathways sprinkled with chalk and festooned with flags. And milk should be drunk and halwa too should be consumed. The messages of Rabiul Awwal (birthday of the Prophet PBUH) can be sent on the cell-phone and people should embrace each other.
Hassaan bin Thabit says O Prophet PBUH when your face comes before my eyes it seems that my eyes had not beheld a beautiful face before equal to yours. My (speaker’s) teacher Hazrat Shah Sahib used to add to the verse of Thabit by saying who am I that only my eye should behold the face of the Prophet PBUH, the eye of the entire Universe has not seen a face like that of the Prophet’s PBUH.
