The issue is: the Prophet PBUH said if you are near a dying Muslim don’t ask him to recite kalima; do it yourself, standing next to him. When kalima comes out of your lips the dying person will also repeat it. But if you ask him to recite kalima and if he refuses, he turns kafir at once. That’s why the Prophet PBUH prohibited the question of kalima. The dying Muslim could be entering the other world and have the angels in sight and he might refuse.

The Prophet PBUH said that if a child is made to recite kalima the moment he is able to speak and if he recites when he is dying, then all the sins committed by him between these two moments will be forgiven.

People don’t attend mosque regularly. Most of them come to masjid only on Eid, wearing new clothes. If the maulvi says Eid is a day late, they curse him and if the maulvi sees the moon and calls the first fast early, then they call him names. Hence they are exposed only rarely to the sermon of the cleric.

Once people asked me to lecture them during the funeral of a deceased person. Most of them find it insulting to give respect to the maulvi. A man clad in a suit was sitting in front of me with his face averted. When I said I am reciting the Quran he said he was listening. I know how to deal with such people. I said the Prophet PBUH stated that if a Muslim dies on Thursday night or Friday morning then Allah will not subject him to hisab (inquiry) in the grave. And if a kafir dies on these days then his hisab will begin on Saturday.

Two men came to me after the funeral and asked if a Muslim dying on Friday will be forgiven. You know how these men looked. They had collars to their shirts, they had beards but they were uncombed, and their hair was parted on the side in the Western style. They asked me the question three times and I replied the same way.

On this the two said this is not mentioned in any hadith. I replied that if you come with me to my house I will serve you tea and show you the volume of Tirmizi Sharif where this is recorded. But I still can’t convince you just as Prophet PBUH could not convince Abu Jahl. Allah will forgive the man dying on Friday but you will not forgive because of your narrow minds.

Then there was a man who had prepared himself on the person of Yazid and waited for me to come so that he could defeat me in argument. The man was a teacher and was surrounded by his admirers. Hew asked me about Yazid. I answered what do you think about Imam Hussain? My view of Yazid is the same as Hussain’s was of him. After he had given all his arguments in favour of Yazid I asked him do you love Yazid? He said yes. I answered that I loved Hussain. I then asked him that you should pray that your end be with Yazid and I will pray that my end be with Hussain. He was hesitant and said his end should be with both. This meant that he was not sure about abandoning Hussain. His followers became convinced that the teacher had been cornered by me. Hussain is sure to go to Heaven. The Prophet PBUH said he and Hassan will be the leaders of all dwellers of Paradise. And the killers of Hussain will not enter Paradise.

My argument is that praying in favour of the dead person is effective. And thawab (reward) goes to the dead person and this is what we Sunnat wal Jamaat (Barelvi) believe in. Those who believe that thawab is not transferred should stop reciting the namaz of funeral of their dear ones.
